The Bikes

Trials bikes require very little space to ride and also are generally very quiet compared to other motorsports. They use very low pressure tires with a wide footprint and do very little damage to natural terrain similar to a mountain bicycle. The bikes are very light (145-160lbs) which makes them easy to handle for all sizes of riders. Popular brands are: Beta, Gas Gas, Sherco, Montesa (Honda), Scorpa, Ossa and JTG. Displacements range from 50cc to 300cc. Both two and four stroke engines are used with the majority being two stroke. Recently a few companies have introduced electric bikes like Oset (16.0 12.5, 20.0), Gas Gas (TXT e-8 and e-12) for children and Gas Gas (TXT-e 63 kg dry weight!)- urban for mature riders. Typical cost of a trials bike is approximately 65% to 80% the cost of a modern enduro motorcycle. For beginners buying a second hand units is recommended.

Advantage of Trials

Trials bike are quiet. Softer tires and low tire pressure (rear 4 lbs front 6 lbs) cause very little disturbance to the environment and terrain we ride on. Trials also do not require a large area to ride, and a small area can facilitate hours of enjoyment. Trials is a true art of motorcycle handling. Technique and balance are key when riding trials, many riders choose this sport in addition to enduro, motocross and street riding to improve their skill on any bike. Some good examples are Graham Jarvis, David Knight, Cody Webb and Tadeusz Blazusiak. All of these riders were successful trials riders prior to competing in enduro events. Trials is for everyone from children to seniors as focuses on balance, timing and coordination. Generally the sport is low impact and has a much lower injury rate than similar motorsports.

Trials bikes typically have a very low seat with little to no padding. This allows for maximum movement and control of the bike as rider position is mostly standing. The bikes typically carry 2.5-3 liters of fuel, however some companies produce oversized fuel tanks for longer trips and more comfortable seats to allow for riding sitting down. The benefits of trials are many, riders often are able to get access to beautiful outdoor locations that would be inaccessible by any other motor vehicle, and because the tires are soft with a large contact area there is very little disturbance to the terrain.
